Uche Secondus 3rd anniversary: A trail blazer, shock absorber of opposition democratic practice in Nigeria

By Abubakar Yusuf

Prince Uche Secondus was unanimously elected as the PDP National Chairman in 2017, in a transparent and incontrovertible circumstances, through a popularly endorsed list by all the party’s machinery from units, wards, local government, states and at the national level known as ‘Unity List’

But before then,Secondus had held the position of Ag National Chairman and other positions in the party over the years, to reposition and position the party to victory under a robust democratic practice.

For 16 consecutive years as a card carrying member and one of the top leaders of PDP as the then ruling party, he has been part of the success story and one of the main gladiators in the party, that heralded the popular name of PDP, as the most
graassrooted party in Nigeria, since the return to democracy in 1999.

The unbroken history of holding onto the power by PDP in his home state of River state, remain an exemplary record and worthy of emulation, with all efforts to annexe the state in the last general election in 2019 by the APC.

The current PDP National Chairman, apart from this record of electoral victory and control of his home state, also extended similar prowess to the entire South- South uptill the moment, devoid of political thuggery, hooliganism and day light political robbery, through election fraud by the ruling APC in Nigeria.

So much so that under the leadership of Prince Uche Secondus, what transpired in Nigeria election in 2019, if votes actually count, PDP would have won about 30 states in Nigeria and revert to the ruling party.

This was evidenced after winning Benue, Adamawa, Bauchi, Sokoto, Zemfara, Edo, Oyo, Imo,even though, scuttle for the ruling APC, solidifying the PDP strong hold in the Nigerian polity.

If what the people desire were allowed to prevail in states like Niger, Plateau, Nassarawa, Kogi, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Kwara, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Lagos and Ogun States, PDP would have turn the hand of clock to a better governance, all in the current stint of Prince Uche Secondus.

Even at that, the National Chairman and his team in PDP had a broken records of winning streak of about seven to eight states, were the ruling party were holding sway to the consternation and encouragement of the international Communities and super powers.

This developement alone had position and unrivaled records of the current Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus in PDP and since the return to democratic practice In Nigeria since 1999.

Aside the winning streak, his ability to paly a leading opposition roles in all ramifications, stands the PDP as the next bride that Nigerians are determined to woo back to power in 2023.

Secondus had guaranteed internal democracy, even though playing down reward and loyalty system in the main opposition party, in recent times.

His doggedness in confronting the ruling APC anti people’s policies and programs, had position the main opposition party PDP, as the darling of many Nigerians.

The PDP National Chairman outspokenness and fearlessness on issues that boarders on the nation, has won the heart of many Nigerians, now regarding the ruling APC as an abberation.

His regards for party leadership and echelon , particularly high regard for governor’s on the platform of PDP, Senators and Members of the House of Representatives. Including state Lawmakers and local government chairmen, had made the main opposition party, so formidable in the political sphere.

On the whole, his ability to embrace reconciliation, party supremacy, concede to collective bargaining, including the welfare of ordinary Nigerians above political sentiments, had rebuild the party in the last few years.

Prince Secondus had made the PDP so formidable even as the main opposition Party, for a ruling party to deploy all state apparatuses into elective positions at all levels, jittery of been defeated in a free, fair and credible election.

This is evident in the verdict of the International observers that occassioned series of sanctions by the international communities which included the UAE, UK, UN,and other super powers not only on Nigerian goverrment, but individuals holding both elective and appointive positions in the current dispensation.

Nigerians after going the rigours, pains of maladministration during the COVID-19 and ENDSARS, had ressolve to allow the current leaders wither and allow semaless support for the main opposition Party PDP, under the leadership acumen of the current Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus.
