The quest for women’s involvement into politics and governance in the country has taken another dimension.

Speaking to journalist in Abuja, Senator of the federal republic of Nigeria, Sen.Enyinnaya Abaribe said the workshop was to fashion out ways to to encourage women actively participation in politics and governance in the country.

Sen. Abaribe said, some of the causes militating against lower participation of women in politics include environment, religion, lack of space given to women to participate, sponsorship among others hence there was every need for legislation to encourage more women into politics.

“We need a specific legislation as regards women’s participation in politics, we van even make a rule by law that certain positions are left for women”.

Speaking separately, the Deputy Ambassador of Germany Mrs. Regine Hess and Hon. Mrs. Nkeirruka Onyejeocha said legislation is a way to go to give more legal backings to enhance women’s involvement into politics and governance.

Mrs. Hess further said the numerical strength of women in Nigeria is encouraging but regretted why after promises by political actors to include more women in 2019 general elections ,only few women were elected into political positions.

“I am disappointed with the outcome of the 2019 general election with few women emerging winners ”.

On her part, the project Advisor Gender and Inclusion Cathy Latiwa said the effective participation of women in electoral process remains a crucial challenge to be surmounted if Nigeria’s democracy is to be placed on a sound and sustainable footing.

Latiwa advised that for Nigeria to get it right in terms of developmental process in governance, women must be included because of their enormous and immense potentials to making a positive difference in governance.

The programme was put together by the European center for electoral support in collaboration with the Federal republic of Germany.
