Slaves in our mist

By Joe Kutuh

It is no longer news that a group called Fulani Nationality Movement {FUNAM} has claimed responsibility for the attack on Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State. This does not worry me as much as the comments and conclusions of some of our own Tiv kinsmen. Most have become security analysts postulating several theories.

I have struggled with my thoughts as to whether to drop my worries here. I have tearfully read the jests and ridicules from our brothers and sisters concerning this incidence and I have come to the sad conclusion that the Tiv nation is lost. We are no longer men but jesters and slaves in the palace courts of our enemies. If a gubernatorial candidate can come on facebook to ridicule Gov Ortom because he’s seeking election on a political platform other than governor’s party, then we’re in deep shit as a people. Some of us dance naked seeking for favours from the sons of the caliphate. The same sons who bowed to our forefathers at Ushongo hills.

This is happening at a time most ethnic nationalities in the country are regrouping and creating cohesion irrespective of party affiliations. They are ready because the undeclared war is at their doorsteps. They have formed Amotekum and Eastern Security Network. Here, we are at home churning out scenarios about the governors escape race. We are like a man who has lost his manhood waiting for his prophecy to be fulfilled.

Our enemies have drawn the battle line and we are carrying their quivers and stocking them with arrows. They have declared war upon us and some of us have chosen to play the ostrich. This international self acclaimed Fulani organization spanning the sahel have made no bones about Nigeria being their final abode on earth. Their promised land. Their Canaan that must be occupied in the 21st century. I don’t know which god has promised them this land. Definitely not the God we worship. Not the God that has promised Gov Ortom and the Benue people that ” a thousand shall fall by your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look, and see the reward of the wicked”. They called it technical failure in communication for their failed mission, I call it divine confusion in their camp.

Those calling this attack the figment of Ortom’s imagination do not understand the magnitude of the problem. They think it’s a classical comedy. When Gov Abullahi Sule of Nassarawa state kept raising alarms over the presence of Fulani killer squads and Boko Haram elements on the Benue borderline with his state, these doubting Thomases didn’t read the memo. When Alhaji Saleh Alhassan, National Secretary of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore warned the Benue helmsman last week to abrogate the state’s Anti-Open Grazing Law, it was to them the governor that was drafting his script that was acted out last Saturday at Tyo-Mu. How pathetic. How can a brave people be reduced to clowns in this unfortunate manner. The rest of the country is doubting if we’re the same warriors they knew. Only Ortom seems to be wearing the armour of a warrior while others are seeking to get laid by strange men.

I’m utterly ashamed and disgusted. Thank you Gov Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State for knowing when to play politics and when to be a statesman. Please remind some of your party men in Benue state that this eminent disaster is beyond party politics. It’s about our collective survival as a people.
