President Jovonel Moïse of Haiti has been assassinated, wife severely injured

President Jovonel Moïse of Haiti has been assassinated. His wife is also reportedly severely injured.

Moïse was killed in his private residence in Port-au-Prince around 1:00 AM local time on Wednesday by a group of assailants.

Statement by Haitian Prime Minister Claude Joseph said the assailants were Spanish-speaking.

The attack followed years of protests against Moïse’s government and calls for his resignation.

Moïse has served as Haiti’s president since February 2017
