The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu has charged the media to re-examine the entire process of the 2019 General Elections with a view to consolidate the success and establish a template that would address the challenges ahead of 2023 elections.
Professor Yakubu gave the charge at a meeting with the media in Abuja to review the 2019 general elections.
He said the elections are over and the purpose of the meeting with the media was to discuss on the silent aspects of the process which require improvement.
According to him, journalists were accredited to cover all aspects of the election processes and the commission want to hear how these processes can be improved upon starting from pre-election activities such as the Registration of voters, conduct of primaries and nomination of candidates by political parties to election day activities such as accreditation of voters, voting process, collation and declaration of results.
The INEC chairman while appreciating the media contribution for making electoral process better, he also reminded them of the Kogi and Bayelsa Governorship elections scheduled for 16th
November, 2019, assuring that all the recommendations arising from the meeting will be considered and implemented by the commission before the conduct of the Governorship elections in the two states.
In his remarks, the President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ), Chris Isiguzo said, the media remains the oxygen in the electoral process.
INEC believes that the media is the gateway for information dissemination to citizens.
