Prof. Shima Gyoh
Professor of Medicine, Shima Gyoh has condemned practice by some medical doctors who demand police report before attending to emergency cases in their hospitals.
Gyoh who made the condemnation in Abuja during his formal public presentation of the book “Principles of Clinical Ethics and their Legal Dimension in Nigeria ” frowned at such practice that it is unacceptable and any doctor found wanting in that act should dealt with to serve as deterrent.
On the scrap of Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) which is a regulatory body for medical practitioners, Professor Gyoh stressed the need to bringing the council back.
According to him the book’s title was carefully selected by himself and co-author Barrister Layi Babatunde) (SAN) in order to shed more light on the menace.
On his part, Co-Author of the book, Barr. Babatunde spoke on the background of the title which he said is aimed at taking a serious look at clinical ethics in the medical profession and the legal aspect that relates to medical code of conduct.
He said the book of course deals in detail about what is required of Medical practitioners especially having regards to the work of medical and dental tribunal which he served as a legal assessor at the time his co-author (Prof. Gyoh) was also the Chairman of the tribunal.
He said they both put their collective experiences over the years in order to be a good guide to medical doctors and lawyers who have to relate with such issues whether in advisory capacity or when they have to appear for their case.
The two authors are however calling for reestablishment of MDCN in order to continue it’s mandate to regulate operation of Medical practitioners in Nigeria, as no one monitors malpractice of Medical ethics which is not too good for the country.
