President Mohammadu Buhari has assured workers that his administration will fully implement the new minimum wage, as Nigeria joins the rest of the World to Celebrate International Workers Day.
President Buhari who was represented by Vice President Yemi Osibanjo, at the 2019 May Day Celebration in Abuja , retraited his administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers, citing the provision of bailout funds for States that couldn’t pay salaries, payment of backlog of arrears of pensions as proof of his commitment to that effect.
He further promised to expand the scope of the micro credit loans to petty traders in his second term, noting that it is his firm belief that the Nigeria citizens, especially the critical mass, must be at the centre of his economic policies.
Earlier in his remark, the President, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ayuba Wabba called for the revamp of the Nation’s textile, electricity, industrial, mining and steel sectors in order to boosts job creation in the country.
Meanwhile some of the workers who represented their Union also applauded President Buhari for eventually approving the long awaited minimum wage, which according to them, the battle of the minimum wage started since 2017.
The Theme of this Year’s Workers Day Celebration is “Another 100 Years of Struggle For Jobs, Dignity and Social Justice in Nigeria”.
