The National Unity and Peace Corps (NUPEC) has assured the Federal Government that it has the expertise to actualise its avowed commitment to ensuring a peaceful society.
The Corps Commandant General, Dr. Chinedu Nneji gave the assurance in Abuja on Friday at an event to mark the annual ritual to celebrate the 2018 United Nations International Day of Peace.
Every 21st Day of September since 1948 is a day for shared aspiration to end conflict in all its forms and to safeguard the human rights of all people. It is a day which the United Nations calls for a 24 hour global ceasefire.
The theme for 2018 is, “The Tight of the People-The Universal Declaration of Human Right at 70”.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Nneji explained that the core mandate of NUPEC is conflict resolution, mediation and mitigation and not security as erroneously conceived in some quarters.
He called on Nigerians to support and cooperate with the government at the centre in curbing all forms of criminalities to bring about peace in the country which is what the United Nations and Peace Corps stands for.
“The popular saying that if you want peace, be prepare for war”, should be reviewed to be, “If you want peace be prepared to adopt respect for human rights as your watchword”. All other things like justice, equity, fairness, tolerance and freedom of opinion which are indices of peace will definitely fall into place.
“We therefore, call on His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, to please reconsider his stand on Nigeria Peace Corps Bill and sign it into law to allow the National Unity and Peace Corps practice what we preach. Our core mandates are conflict resolution, mediation and mitigation, and not security as it was presented to Mr. President”.
Dr. Nneji assured that the Corps has on ground already qualified personnel who are chattered mediators with developed strategies to handle and resolve any type of crises no matter the complexity.
Stakeholders who presented goodwill messages are the event were unanimous that the panacea to a peaceful society lies with good governance, inclusion of all and mediation in areas of conflict.
Resource persons also presented papers bordering on peace.
Highlights of the event were a parade, drama sketches on achieving a peaceful society.
