Nigerian ambassadors to 25 countries have been recalled back to the country with effect from Tuesday, December 31. Those affected are career ambassadors who have attained the retirement age of 60 and or have clocked 35 years in service.
MediaDimensions gathered that the approval by President Muhammadu Buhari was conveyed to the affected envoys in a letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs signed by the Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama. It was learnt that the tenure of the 25 ambassadors elapsed in December 2018 but was extended by one year.
Some of countries where the recalled ambassadors are serving include Morocco, Cameroon, Cuba, Austria, Angola, Kenya, Belgium, Mali, Indonesia, Philippines, Senegal, Hungary and Czech Republic among others.
The retiring ambassadors who would have their last full day at work today have been directed to hand over to the most senior diplomatic officer in their respective missions.
It will be recalled that President Buhari recently approved the deployment of three ambassadors with letters of credence to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Democratic Republic of Sao Tome & Principe and the Republic of Chad. They are Muhammed Abdullahi Mabdul, Christopher Chidi Chiejina and Zanna Bukar-Kolo respectively.
