Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), says it has released the time table and schedule of activities for the conduct of governorship elections for Bayelsa and Kogi States.

The Chairman of the commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu who made the disclosure in Abuja, at a meeting with the leaders of political parties to review the 2019 general elections said party primaries are scheduled to from 18th August, to 5th September 2019.

Prof Mahmood warned that the deadline of 5th September 2019 is sacrosanct and fixed, as no nomination arising from primaries conducted after the deadline will be accepted by the commission.

According to the INEC boss, the conduct of primaries and nomination of candidates must be transparent and democratic in accordance with the provisions of section 87 of the Electoral Act as well as it’s regulations and guidelines.

He however, urged political parties to avoid persistent rescheduling of their primaries or late minute change of venue which sometimes disenfranchise thee members and make effective monitoring by the commission difficult.

Also speaking at the meeting, the National Chairman of Inter-Party Advisory Council IPAC, Peter Ameh called for collective effort for all stakeholders to making the political system serve the Nigerian people better, adding that the building of a consolidated democracy is not only the strengthening of certain institutions like the Electoral system, judiciary among others.

The commission strongly warned that where political parties opt for direct primaries, there should be proper register of members otherwise it will amount to conducting an election without the voters’ register.
