Armed Forces set to strengthen existing cooperation through sports

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin in a bid to further cement the existing relationship between the armed forces of Nigeria and other security agencies has announced the commencement of it’s third edition of half marathon championship on Saturday.

The CDS made the announcement on Tuesday in a press conference on a need to organize the marathon exercise in Abuja.

General Olonisakin who was represented by the organizing committee chairman, comadore Nuhu Gidere Bala explained that the half marathon championship which is an annual exercise is aimed at further strengthen the already existing relationship between the armed forces of Nigeria and other security agencies through sports.

According to him, this year’s edition would be featuring about fourteen (14) security agencies, including the armed forces of Nigeria with two hundred and fifty (250) entries competing for the star prize in the exercise.

Adding that this year’s edition would also include the participation of veteran officers.

“The theme of this year’s exercise is “Together we Are”, the regular marathoners are expected to cover a distance of 21.5 kilometers, while the veteran officers are to run for 10 kilometers.

The starting point for regular marathoners is from the public servant institute at AA along Kubwa express – way, while that of the veteran is at tipper garage along the same express way to sports complex of Aguiyi Ironsi Cantonment in Abuja.

Our correspondent gathered that, members of the organizing committee for the exercise are drawn from all the participatory security agencies and armed forces of Nigeria including representatives from the athletic federation of Nigeria (AFN) , federal ministry of sports and youth development as well as the FCT force council.
