During a field trip to Yamarwa Fulani, a community with a population of about 1,620 people, in Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State, which said to be Open Defection Free (ODF)
After going round the community for assessment and to confirm their claims, the Village head, Rabiu Usman told journalists that the community has done its part by making sure that every household has their latrines/toilets.
According to him, those who do not have the required latrines, they made available temporary ones to ensure that the community is free from open defection practices.
In most cases in the same community, the idea of being a brother’s keeper comes to play, whereas community members contribute to assist other members of the community to build toilets/latrines.
In sustaining the tempo, the community also introduces sanctions on those who do not comply to defecating in a open, whereby teenagers who default pay the sum of two thousand Naira after packing it with their bare hands, while adults who default pack with their bare hands and Pay three thousand Naira as fine.
To ensure compliance, the community has set up an inspection team that regularly goes around the village to inspect.
On his part, the Chairman of Danbatta Local Government, Idris Zago while expressing poor funding of the local government, he reiterated its commitment to ensure that all communities in the local government are properly informed as well as expanding the awareness to promote campaign against OD in order to achieve ODF before or by 2025.
With the advent of the local government autonomy, some of the monies will be used for community development and sanitation in Nigeria.
